About this Role: The Veterinary Health Center (VHC) within the College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking applicants for a Veterinary Nurse. This position is responsible for providing technical nursing services to the Large Animal Barn Section of the KSU-VHC. Primary purpose is to coordinate technical services required for providing quality veterinary care to client, teaching and research patients presented to the Large Animal Barn for treatment. This position is also responsible for monitoring veterinary student entries into the computerized hospital management system and for assuring that stocking service areas has been accomplished. Lastly, this position is responsible for coordination of animal treatments, instruct, train and supervise students and employees in approved treatment technique. Duties / Responsibilities: Clinical Facilitator: This position will be responsible for monitoring patient care; patient flow in hospital, field service and in the isolation areas; patient record maintenance utilizing the hospitals veterinary software system ; patient handling, treatment, and restraint during all phases of the teaching program while directly interacting with students, faculty and staff. Teach nursing skills to students while still allowing students to manage patient treatments and House Officers to attend 7:30 am learning opportunities. Initiative and oversight will be needed to assist in supervision and maintenance of all stocking activities in the large animal work areas. Typical daily responsibilities may include: Plan daily schedule based on logged appointments. Check with on-duty clinician(s) for rescheduled or non-scheduled activities. Organize students, necessary materials and equipment to facilitate efficiency for clients received throughout the day. Supervise case treatments beginning at 8:00 am and ending 5:00 pm. Assist students in restraint to ensure safety and proper animal care and treatments. Assist faculty in monitoring medical record(s) and assuring daily computer entries and billings in the hospital veterinary software program are kept up to date following the established KSU-VHC format including field service paperwork entry. Monitor daily hospitalized patient feed cards, stall maintenance, and animal appearance. Technical Services: This position will provide on-going staffing relative to the service commitment of the teaching hospital. Technical responsibilities of this position will be to the Large Animal Barn of the KSU-VHC both equine and livestock services. Technical responsibilities will include equipment setup and operation; surgical preparation and setup (excluding the Large Animal Surgical Suite area); and clinical assistance to faculty within the section(s) to facilitate services and communications between hospital activities such as radiology, anesthesia, central preparation, and the dispensary. Technical responsibility for daily ICU coverage (from 8:00 to 9:30 am) while students attend rounds may be included. Typical responsibilities may include: Maintain the large animal barn on a daily basis. Duties will include stocking, cleaning, and returning residual products to central dispensary or central supply as deemed necessary. Maintain all equipment associated with the conduct of the Large Animal Barn and Field Service Garage in good working order. Large maintenance needs such as chute repair or equipment purchases are forwarded to the attention of the appropriate supervisor and purchasing center. Participate in orientation of rotating 4th year veterinary students including teaching clinical nursing skills. Take an active role in the supervision and training of fourth year veterinary students in all aspects of large animal veterinary medicine to include placement and maintenance of indwelling catheters, injection site(s) and technique, use of stomach tubes, set-up and maintenance of fluid therapy, clipper care, proper handling of pharmaceuticals, proper restraint technique and safety while loading and unloading patients, administering, maintaining and monitoring of patient sedation and anesthesia. Provide support to endoscopy procedures including maintenance and care of endoscopy equipment and supplies. Participate and assist in setup and teaching of clinical skills courses for underclass students. Additional Responsibilities: Additional technical and training responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following: Initiate measures to increase the efficiency and operation of the Large Animal barn as it relates to technical training and patient care. As necessary, assist with coverage of emergency care, vacation period coverage and unexpected teaching demands with other nurses. Be an effective and dependable employee by beginning each day with a clean neat uniform, establish and maintain a good work ethic while also maintaining a positive and professional relationship with faculty, staff, students and clients. Perform other duties as requested by supervisor, section head, hospital administrator, or hospital director. Complete training necessary for compliance approval (IACUC) for the use of teaching herd animals. Required Minimum Qualifications: Must be registered as a paraprofessional under the authority of the Kansas Board of Veterinary Medicine Examiner within six months of appointment. For a Veterinary Nurse I: Completion of a two year college program in veterinary and animal technology accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association. For a Veterinary Nurse II: Completion of a two year college program in veterinary and animal technology accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association and two years of relevant experience. For a Veterinary Nurse III: Completion of a two year college program in veterinary and animal technology accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association and five years of relevant experience as a state credentialed veterinary technician (RVT, LVT, CVT). Preferred Qualifications: Two years post-graduate experience in a veterinary hospital setting One year post-graduate experience in veterinary food animal procedures Clinical teaching and/or supervisory experience will be considered a beneficial asset for this position Excellent communication skills and strong interpersonal skills Experience with veterinary hospital management programs software such as VetStar Special Instructions to Applicants: Please submit cover letter, resume, and contact information for three professional references Screening of Applications Begins: Screening of applications begins immediately and will continue until the position is filled.
